They have to tell you about things that come up as Advisory Notices.
Basically, if a thing they have to check has only just passed, they have to tell you that. So if your tyres are only just in the legal limit, they have to tell you. If, 5000 miles later, Mr Policeman nicks you for having bald tyres, bringing out a months-old MOT saying they passed is no defence - it's still up to you to make sure the car is legal to drive.
