A bit of advice for those who wish to avoid the chance of the sorrow that it brings, you should salute the magpie and say good morning or afternoon Mr magpie. My mum taught me that and so far it has worked perfectly.

I want saw Richard Herring do at least half an hour on the magpie counting chant. His point was if you are lucky enough to see seven magpies all at once,why is your only reward a secret never to be told? What use is that? It seems out of proportion when you get gold for seeing six and silver if you see five.
