I don't think I'd choose my nine favourite songs - I see it as autobiography so I'd choose nine songs that characterised phases of my life.
For example:
1 - Mozart #40 First Movement - important parts of childhood
2 - Queen - It's Late - another important part of my childhood
3 - ACDC - Down Payment Blues - one that's stayed with me
4 - Wedding Present - My Favourite Dress - took me a long time to like the Weddoes but I prefer them to the Smiths now and reminds me of studenty times
5 - Barber - Adagio For Strings - just a stunning piece of music however you look at it
6 - Kate Bush - Man With The Child In His Eyes - OR Queen - Days Of Our Lives - either is a retrospective looking back kind of a song (for me - though not as intended in the former case)
7 - Smalltown Boy rebooted (solo voce + pno) - both a beautiful song and a reminder of part of me that's stayed constant while so much else has changed (fighting against bigotry)
8 - something by Motorhead or Rammstein or Sabbath - I was always into hard rock and still am
9 - maybe Holiday in Cambodia or something to remind me of my genuinely kick-out-rebellious days as I slump into later-years somnolence
See, that wouldn't be it at all. There's no ska, no Jam/Who, no modern stuff (which despite the kids I still quite like some of), no actual punk, no Mahler, Debussy or Satie, honestly I could do a hundred tracks and still get nowhere close to it.
It's not that my life has been particularly significant or interesting, even to me let alone anyone else. I'm just rubbish at doing pr?cises.
