You already know this

but you will spend much much more on ink than the printer itself.

I use a Canon MG3100-series thingy. I've had no issues at all with it (unlike HP predecessors) and the ink lasts a while (get the larger options). It's lasted several years and shows no signs of moribundity. It can print double-sided. If by "large" you mean >60 or so sides though you may want something a little more heavy duty. As with most printers you can adjust the print quality when you print stuff. It scans and photocopies (in colour) beautifully.
