The Dutch winner of Mastermind coined the phrase in 1968

Gert Van Der Trout (specialist subject 'The First World War 1914-1918') is still the only foreigner to win the long running quiz show.

Magnus Magnusson asked him after he won how he had developed such a wealth of general knowledge, Gert proclaimed "I'm just a clever clogs!". Since then the phrase has stuck.
