Remove everything else. I did this for my parents they had s**tloads of stuff they didn't want or would never actually use. I taught them to use gmail in the browser and then removed Outlook, tons of other stuff, leaving only the basic Windows services plus flash, acrobat and one or two other things (I did leave Word on as they use that).
I educated them to refuse the "free ad-ons" like Ask when you install Java or whatever it is when you install Flash. I got them on Chrome rather than IE.
I then ran a disk defrag and then went to User Posted Link and showed them how to use it. I put a recurring reminder in their calendar for the second Wednesday of every month (it updates the second Tuesday) and put a Favourite in their browser and also in the calendar reminder so they'd rinse and repeat each month themselves.
Pick your favourite free anti-virus and put it on for them and set it to automatic updates. Set their windows to automatic updates too.
In total took me maybe an hour and they're much happier and their box now zips along quite merrily.
