The story so far

on Ashton is that West Ham, Pompey, Charlton and Man City have expressed an interest.

Harry Rednapp has been scared off by the reported ?7m price tage he has been quoted and Curbishly is supposed to have offered ?5m plus Lisbie. He may have stood a better chance with that one if he had allowed us to extend his loan spell beyond the first month. He had only just got back to full match fitness when Curbs took him back so we didn't see the best of him.

West Ham are supposed to be ready to blow ?5m on some East european guy nobody has ever heard of. Me, I would rather risk ?7m on a proven goalscorer. I think Man City might be the likeliest destination. It is nearer Ashton's home and Pearce is supposed to have ?10m available before he has offloaded anyone.

Now I hear that Green is interesting Pompey. I wouldn't be too disappointed if he went but not for anything less than ?2.5m. He is the right age and still part of the England setup. We have an able deputy in Ward and this could generate the funds for a few extra outfield players.
