and they got to the CL semis. So it seems a bit harsh to blame that on the Spanish FAs decision. At least they took their responsibility of selecting CL entrants seriously. Not like our FA, desperately trying to put the ball back into UEFA's court. If the FA REALLY believed that Liverpool had to be given the chance to defend the trophy they should have held the 4th English place open for them (as they said they would do last year)
