R2D2 had rocket motors under his chasis.
With subtle use of said rockets, and gravity, he could have effected a kind of jumping action.
Hence the "fairly" recent
"Ole , Ole , if you don't jump , you're Ipswich scum"
chant would not be beyond the likeable droids capability.
