You can see that up to the crash Labour were spending around 40%, hardly unprecedented. Thatcher and Major spent more at time.
The big up-kick (to 47%, not 50%) was post crash. This was due to the sharp fall in GDP and the corresponding increase in benefits etc. Interestingly this seems to the pattern across all recessions (look at the 70s / early 90s)
This again nails the Labour are profligate lie.
Don't get me wrong, I am not a hard nosed Labourite. However, the persistence of this misconception does irk me.
