I know that we are all getting a bit sick of the politics but I needed to post this.
This is a pretty balanced piece on Labour spending by an Oxford academic.

They maybe could have saved a little more for the bad times, and selling the gold cheaply was a big mistake, but most of the deficit came from the banking crisis. The idea that their spending was 'out of control' is Tory propaganda that has stuck. I don't understand why Labour didn't work harder to dispel this, as it has definitely stuck in the electorate's mind.
