He's wrong on one pretty big thing for me

That is relevant, Obi-Wan takes on Anakin against the councils wishes as it was Qui-Gon's wish that anakin is tranined.

The council beleive him too old, an issue that crops up again with Luke in A New Hope.

Admittedly not watching 1 means you never see this, but this implication is that Anakin is lured easier to the dark side as his training started much later than was usual. Its part of the story of why Anakin becomes Vadar.

That said that might not be enough to watch a whole 2 hour fillum...
