I've always thought a 2 day, 2 innings, 50 overs per innings match would work well.

Weekends only, if you went for one day you'd see both teams batting and fielding.

I reckon that'd keep it short enough to interest those who are less keen on the 5 dayers and the fact that play would only be on weekends would help keep the attendances up.
