Yeah I'd say not common but not a shock. I sort of meant that the co-pilot had no way of

predicting that at some stage he was going to leave the cockpit.

Unless, as was suggested earlier, this pilot had a habit of stretching his legs and having a chat after reaching the cruising altitude.
