To explain is not to excuse

and I don't think he's ever tried to use his poor mental health to get out of the penalty for drink driving.

Equally, I don't think the fact that his mental health in all probability led him to do something very stupid and dangerous, for which he is rightly being punished like anyone else would be, should lessen our understanding of his condition or our empathy as he goes through what he has to to work through whatever he has to work through.

Depression is a horrible disease that kills people. Those who do stupid things while suffering from it should not be protected from the consequences of their actions, and CC has not been protected from the consequences of his. However that doesn't mean they're not as deserving of help and support as any other sufferer of any other horrible and potentially fatal illness.
