only do they have all the flightpath, speed and altitude information from FlightTracker, but also some nationalities who were booked on the plane are being confirmed by online ticket brokers (e.g. vliegtickets.nl).

With MH17, my former colleague's wife's ID card was tweeted by a Ukrainian militia man half an hour after the crash.

I put on CNN cos with all the TV on demand and streaming I've downgraded my TV sub to the minimum - no BBC News etc - and basically all their "news" is quoting tweets. Quite incredible. Completely uncorroborated but if they don't quote it they fear losing out on scoops. I like the fact that BBC exercises restraint with that sort of thing. News agencies are really going to be obsolete soon.
