I think we worked out that your hotel was the North Staffordshire Hotel, opposite Stoke train station.

Stoke used to be the centre in the 70's, but (for some reason) the council decided to redevelop Hanley then and have continued to do so ever since - so Stoke itself is an absolute s**thole now.

I'm going back up there this weekend, can barely contain my excitement!
