To me, and I'm not nit picking...

Had we lost, my guess is he couldn't or wouldn't have been so hard on them as he has to pick them up from a loss first and foremost.

Given we salvaged somethung, we can channel their annoyance instead and go harder at them.

I know it's 'joining the dots', but...
