Clarkson is a presenter. He does lines/interviews which are presumably

largely scripted for him by the writers/producers. I'm sure he does some ad lib stuff but some of it may even be on autocue. Its hardly rocket science is it, talking about cars or asking a celebrity what it was like to drive really fast round a track. I'm sure they could get Hammond or May to do his studio bits or even a third party to fill in for 3 shows with minimal disruption.
