and also the advertising revenue associated with american football is absolutely huge for US television, so the broadcasters can probably pay way over the odds, knowing they will get their money back.

Domestic rights are ridiculously expensive in mainstream sports now though. I wonder how much bet365 were paying to be able to show a lot of championship games earlier this season - only to the non-UK market. Probably would be hundreds of times more to also show them to a domestic audience.
