If you base yourself in Bath (either hotels, B&Bs or there are some decent camp sites to the south of it) and can hack day trips that are 1-2 hr journeys, you're in the centre of a lot of kid friendly stuff. Eg:
1) Dorset coast - Lulworth Cover is an easy day trip, with Bovington Tank Museum or MonkeyWorld either being supplementary day trips or stop-off visits on the way down/back
2) Bristol - Zoo, science museum, aquarium, Harbourside boat trips
3) Stonehenge/Avebury/s**tload of other neolithic & hillfort sites in that area that you can scramble over
4) Longleat Safari Park
5) Cheddar Gorge caves/Wookey Hole caves
6) If old enough to to be into Harry Potter, quite a few recogniseable scenes were filmed around here.
7) There are a soem dedent National Trust/English Heritage places around this way (and even a small castle) that make for interesting 1/2 day diversions
8) Bath is a thoroughly nice place to visit, although depending on the age of yours, there's not a huge amount that is amazingly great for very young kids. Roman Baths would be good if old enough to understand it.
