Are Yank fl. oz. the same size as real fl. oz.?

That says "a cup is 8 ounces". I reckon a standard mug is about 12 fl. oz. (just over half a pint), so 1.5x a cup. If they have proper ounces.

Why is it they have whacking great big 40 ounce buckets of "soda", but dinky little thimbles of a good drink?
