So a competition which doesn't matter in the early rounds suddenly does matter at the end?

Do me a favour. It either matters or it doesn't matter - and if it doesn't matter in the early rounds (when, and I quote, "no-one gives a s**t"), it doesn't matter.

Arsenal winning the Cup last season was like a consolation prize. Fine if it'd been the start of something - but it wasn't. It meant nothing of any significance. Clubs of their size are judged by the Premier League and Champions League. That's it.
