Chap I know worked in Qatar for 3 years.

He got pushed out through no fault of his own because of an impossible co-worker who made up a pack of lies about him. He proved that these were lies; a joke 'appeals process' was set up which, by some strange coincidence, wouldn't hear anything until after his contract had expired, so he was stuffed.

This all happened unexpectedly - and in the meantime, thinking he'd be there for the long term, he'd been stupid enough to get himself into short term debt. The panic he then went through finding someone to sell his car to... he got closer and closer to his deadline to leave the country, and if he hadn't found a buyer... It was all done in cash in the end too!

Point being: he was one of the lucky ones. But there aren't many countries anywhere where if something unexpected happens, people can end up effectively imprisoned. What it's like for the less lucky ones - for those being treated as slaves, living in conditions which are unimaginable, and with no escape at all... eesh.
