Remember that brilliant John Oliver segment just before the WC?

What he said about simultaneously loving the WC and detesting FIFA? That's me, that is. Nothing in the world excites me more than the World Cup; nothing at all. I'm like a kid under a Christmas tree the entire tournament - and unlike almost any English fan I know, international football is more important to me than club football, with England winning the World Cup my biggest dream in life, never mind in sport.

But Qatar 2022? Too much. Much too much. There has to be a line in the sand somewhere, and that's it. Goodness knows, football is a stinking cesspit of corruption, greed and immorality a huge amount of the time - but thousands of workers will be dead by the time it happens. Thousands dead, because of a football tournament?!

So if the big countries won't boycott the event, I think the fans should. When 2022 comes around, don't talk about it, don't watch the games, nothing. However hard/impossible that'll no doubt be for many, and however much it's everyone's free choice what to do about it, that's mine. I view Qatar in exactly the same way as almost everyone viewed apartheid South Africa.
