It is clever when so many important decisions had already gone against us

The best sides in modern football (or modern sport) tend also to be the most clever, streetwise ones. And when, in March 1993, David Phillips turned down a penalty for handball at Wimbledon - telling the ref he'd got it wrong - that was simultaneously absolutely wonderful; and a horrible sign that we were way, way too nice to become Champions.
