FFS, it'd be a no brainer if the alternative was watching some paint dry.

Just go to the reception afterwards, he won't have the foggiest who was there during the service itself. Just tell the bride she looked lovely and that your mate had the biggest grin you'd ever seen on him as he watched her come down the aisle, and they'll both love you forvever (and given the brownie points he'll have earned, your mate will back you up if the bride ever suspects you weren't actually there).

Trickier if your close friend is the bride, admittedly, but a subterfuge is still doable.
