Russia has been invaded from the West many times in the last 300 years or so,

by the French, twice by the Germans, the Swedes and the Poles and they are naturally suspicious in our direction as a result.

So the West and NATO expanding their sphere of influence right up to Russia's borders is the equivalent of the Soviets, or Soviet sympathisers having done the same in the Cuba, Nicaragua, Grenada and the Dominican Republic, all in the last hundred years. All of those situations ended in either direct or indirect US military interventions to protect their so called 'sphere of influence'.
All I'm saying is that Russia's position on Ukraine today is almost identical to the US position during the situations mentioned above.
That doesn't make it right, but it certainly makes it more understandable!
