MS Word is telling me it has checked the spelling and grammar on my document whereas I

know full well it hasn't as I deliberately put in a spelling mistake to catch it out.

Any idea what I need to turn on/off? (USB smells fine btw)

If the spelling check has already been done, it might not do those words again

if you go into the Review tab, there's a button for spelling and grammar
