that's a different question to how I interpreted it

if we knew in advance that we were going to lose then it would be rubbish; there would be no tension, no excitement about winning the semi-final etc..

Hyothetically, between the two outcomes, I'd rather lose a play-off final to Ipswich though than limp to seventh in the league.
