But I do find the right's hatred of inheritance tax amazing. What's good, fair or healthy for society about protecting inherited wealth for the children of the rich? What have people done to deserve that?

I'm sure you can improve the implementation, and there are political choices about how high you set the thresholds, so who you think of as 'rich'. But it's clear that the right hate the idea of it, not the details. Their wish to protect and entrench inequality - to maintain and increase the head start that the children of the wealthy get, when it's already massive and growing - I just find baffling. And offensive.
