Funny thing is, in his case, it WAS going wrong at the end: for all sorts of reasons

Partly that we'd over-achieved beyond imagination in 92/3; partly the after the Lord Mayor's show aspect to life after Munich and Milan (the only period in my life when Norwich City were, briefly, fashionable); partly his fast collapsing relationship with Chase; partly a tactical approach at home which was, in 93/4, actually pretty bloody clueless.

Away from home, we were fantastic because of the sweeper/extra defender: meaning this would convert into an extra man in midfield when we had the ball, and would serve like a rubber springboard, absorbing what home teams would throw at us, then rebounding at speed and in numbers. At home, Walker also played a sweeper: a huge mistake, as so many sides would put men behind the ball and we'd be outnumbered all the time.

I don't think he ever worked this out. Meaning we were sliding by the time he left - but that slide turned into full-on collapse under his successor. It'd still have happened had MW stayed, just not quite as quickly I think.
