If I ever go back, I'll be self-employed if I have anything to do with it.

I like the freedom of that (most don't, though). I was self-employed before I left, and am almost de facto self-employed here in the teaching I do (I'm officially not: I pay PAYE and am employed by an institute - but that institute lets me teach what I want, when I want, so my salary goes up and down each month).
