Bill Gates was once of the opinion that 640K of RAM would be enough for anybody.

Who knows what future applications might require the transmission of colossal amounts of data fast? The Large Hadron Collider can generate a Petabyte of data a second. Imagine setting up a distributed processing system like SETI to analyse raw data from LHC. A gigabyte per second wouldn't go very far at all.

Imagine medical monitors that you might wear about your person (or implanted - that's not just far away SciFi any more), tracking realtime vital statistics. They could generate a phenomenal amount of data to send back to base. Sub-LHC amounts, but still lots and lots.
