In the modern era, first it was every 4 years (dictatorship era), then every 2 years (post-dictatorship era), then every 3... then they finally settled it down.

The 2004 Copa was a watershed. The 2001 one was ruined by fears of terrorism, boycotts, big countries sending youth teams etc. The '04 Copa was a proper tournament and it's settled down since. Remember, the 2016 centenary event is, in effect, unofficial; the cycle is 2015, then 2019, then 2023. Can't see it reverting back to the chaos of the past now.
