This is such a delicate issue that it's difficult to know what to think

Clearly he's acted not only in a self-destructive way, but also in a manner that hurts other people. So on the face of it, this becomes a question of the extent to which his mental health problems explain that behaviour. It could be that, if he was a happy person without any history of depression, he would never have acted in a way that hurt others. Yet there are tons of people that do things to harm others without suffering any kind of mental ill-health. It's impossible to say that he falls into one or the other category, so I think it's best to just bear his battle with depression in mind rather than using as either an excuse or justification. After all, no one with mental health problems should be defined purely by those problems.
