it's not the clubs fault. The opt in only applies to the monthly payment option

For this you sign a Direct Debit form in which you agree that the club can take whatever money they like from your bank account whenever they like unless you say no.

Therefore they have to ask you to opt out rather than in.

If you pay annually you get the chance to opt in because you are paying them.
