know it fairly well, ex from Brizzle...

the city centre itself is a bit like Norwich but bigger...

lots of redevelopment (bit like riverside but called queyside) with bars restaurents pubs and clubs... nice area (stayed over when we played away at bristol rovers on promotion from league 1)

the city centre has its traditional nightlife/pubs etc and around by the river it has floating restuarents/night clubs etc....

older parts of brizzle have its own areas for shopping/nightlife....clifton is lovely - very much like west london with its own bars and wine bars/restaurents - all a bit posher than the city and an affluent area where young professionals work (so its full of solicitors/estate agents, bankers, office types)

other parts are dreadful.... inner ashton (near brizzle city) are not nice but ashton park where the air balloon festival is held is lovely...in parts like wraxall/nailsea (where my ex is from) further out down the A370 going south all remind of satellite towns like what wymondham and attlebrough are to Norwich

other areas to avoid are around temple meads train station and anywhere imeediatley north of the city....(near to where bristol rovers used to play - now an IKEA!) tho parts of outer kingswood are ok

if it were me - I'd be looking to live out of bristol in a small villagey area with its own ammeneties (shops/pub/chippie etc) and commute in - unless you can afford to live in clifton!
