Maybe Phelan accepted the job knowing that Neil Adams wouldn't last the season and believing that, when Adams was sacked, the board wouldn't look much further than what was in front of them for a replacement and offer the job to him. We didn't and it's so far unlikely that Alex Neil will go anywhere in the near future so he now knows he won't get his opportunity here. Hull have a manager similarly under pressure, so maybe he's taken the job there for the same reasons.
