A real issue is self-selection: people from different background think those jobs aren't for them so they don't bother applying.
A parallel I'd draw is with Oxbridge. Externally they're often perceived as the domain of posh public school types. But the reality is that for almost all Oxbridge colleges (yes there are some exceptions, sadly) the proportion of people from state school applying is statistically identical to the proportion of people from state school getting in.
Put differently, a public school background doesn't give you any advantage over the confidence required to think of applying in the first place. Which is broadly what James Cunt was saying, I think.
