It's a fantasy version of the Wars of the Roses, basically. There is magic, and lots of "gods" none of whom actually have power.
Sounds hokey, sub-Tolkien nonsense, right?
That's what I thought too, until I started watching it. Then reading it. It's so well written that Just Another Chapter Syndrome soon starts eating away at your sleep time...
I read a lot and fantasy is my least favourite genre by some distance, because it's always so clich?d, the characters are one-dimensional, it always ends with the Good beating the Bad and so on.
GoT suffers from none of these and though we don't know how it will end it will definitively not be "and all the nice people won and all the nasty people lost and everything was alright". The ending will be nuanced and bittersweet. Many of the characters have great developmental arcs, for good or bad; redemption, high and low politics, intellectual nuance cut with emotional simplicity and so on. And the magic is written so naturally that you just kind of accept it even if like me you're naturally predisposed against such things.
Fanboi? Moi?
