that many of Martin's set pieces are based on real historical events, purloined and hammered into shape to fit his narrative. I've heard experts in mediaeval European history claim that Martin's fictional world is pretty much spot-on in terms of it's depiction of the treatment of women and the under-privileged. That's really how things were in the dark ages.
