As long as Lerner keeps playing them for an each-way bet and won't spend, it's impossible for them to do any better than they currently are. Whether their fans realise that, I'm none too sure.
Increasingly, I think Villa are kinda where we were this time last season. Any points they do pick up are so ugly, so ground out, that a lot of their fans can't see any positives in that - and the manager's become an Aunt Sally figure to them. Over the last couple of years, I've even seen Villa fans argue that their club NEEDS to get relegated - because only that would give it the gigantic shake it desperately needs.
But when football fans think something can't get any worse, it very often does. I'd be very, very careful what I wished for if I was in their shoes.
Mind you though, on Lambert: compare and contrast the dynamic, energetic alchemist he was at Norwich with the forlorn, depressed, dishevelled, bearded mess he is now. He knows the situation is hopeless; he knows he's only keeping the seat warm until a new owner walks through the door. I think he's lost almost all his drive, any sense of what the point of all this is - but that's only a reflection of his owner, his club, and his fanbase.
