I actually think that that is what we should do

Start a new 3-5 year plan. Make it clear that promotion would be nice this season (and the squad is probably still good enough for a challenge), but it's not fatal to the plan if we don't make it.

If we don't go up, build a young, hungry team that can grow together and dominate the league in a couple of years. This guy would seem to be a good fit for that plan too.

It's what I thought we ought to have done with Adams given his background, but we just lumped a load of expectation on him and expected instant results. Maybe he'll hang around and be part of that kind of rebuilding process.
