For as long as the FA allows clubs to employ players with serious criminal convictions, this sort of farce will continue - the player wants to play because it's all he knows, and clubs are desperate enough to take them on if they're good enough (Barton, Harewood, Hughes etc etc). It's a regulatory failure, not the fault of the ex-con player - he's just trying to do something he is permitted to do
