The Scottish connection

To me, it could only be Derek McInnes or Robbie Neilson. But McInnes is on the verge of something truly historic: I'd be amazed if he left SPL-leading Aberdeen for us. We'd have to make him an incredible offer for him to do so. And of course, Neilson's only been a manager for a few months - albeit take it from me, he's bloody brilliant. Something so, so special about him. I couldn't see him leaving Hearts either (nor, from a selfish point of view, would I want him to in a month of Sundays).

There's no other stand-out candidates up there. Dundee United's Jackie McNamara, another possibility, is surely the next Celtic manager in waiting.

I can't get excited about Adams' departure until we know the identity of the new man, and especially what it says about the board's thinking. I'm merely a bit more hopeful than I was on Saturday - and wouldn't be at all surprised if it ends up being Phelan.
