I wish I had been born a few years earlier

So I could have experienced our cup runs in the 80s/early 90s. In 20-odd years following the club, I've never felt the so-called 'magic of the cup'. The years pass and I keep telling myself that one year we'll have another run, but then we end up playing like we did today, as if poor showings in the cups are somehow hard-wired into the club. It's just so f**king predictable, not to mention depressing. But why? I find it hard to believe it's down to sheer bad luck.
