I'd hazard a guess that the vast majority of those who will vote UKIP won't have actually bothered to read any of the UKIP manifesto and wouldnt, if anyone bothered to ask them about it, really care about immigration/EU either.
UKIP will just hoover up masses of protest votes (much like the Lib Dems used to do before they got all sensible and joined the Government) from those who quite simply don't want to vote for Milliband or Cameron and want to 'send a message'. Even if they don't know what message they want to send...
I think UKIP's 'Westminster doesn't care about YOU' line is far, far more effective than its 'Those swarthy Europeans are a bit dodgy' line. Fundamentally we're not a racist/bigoted society, as much as the Guardian likes to say we are or the Daily Mail might like us to be.
Even when you listen to interviewees who voted UKIP, it's usually not the fact we have immigrants that they're really bothered about, it's the fact that Westminster doesn't adequately support the local communities in which they are hosted. A subtle difference that the anti-UKIP focus on all these fruitbat candidates seems to miss completely.
