because their respective communities feel very strongly that black people are targeted

by the police and it makes them think that the police feel that black lives are worthless.

There's a lot of horrendous treatment everyday, all around the world towards various persons and groups of people. I'm sure you have seen your fair share. A lot of the time fuss isn't made because people are too scared or too desensitised to it. Others fear the backlash from the media or people using the protest for the wrong reason (take the London riots in 2011)
