I think a simple comparison with another club doesn't provide the right answers

Rather than benchmarking, which provides a snapshot that needs to be placed in a longer term historical context (i.e. the WHU chief exec didn't arrive as they were entering L1), fans should be more inward looking in their questioning. E.g.
Firstly, what were his objectives when he arrived?
Secondly, how has he compared against those objectives?
Thirdly, how has his salary evolved in comparison with that performance?
Fourthly, what are the consequences for failing to meet future targets?
Fifthly, what are the risks should he choose to leave?
And many others that I can't be arsed to think of right now. Point is, a snap judgment on his salary following relegation doesn't provide a measured and sensible basis for pay-related decision-making.
